I remember the search for my first term in Experience Institute. It was a stressful time as most of the students, including me, were frantically reaching out to host companies to see if we could land apprenticeships.

With what I thought to be very irrelevant skill set and little experience in the secular space, as I had previously spent 10 years as a vocational pastor, I was worried that no company would give me a chance. I was desperate to obtain an apprenticeship. In finding my first term, I did not “kick the tires” of potential opportunities, rather, I was willing to let the opportunities kick me around. Thankfully, with the help of Victor, Ei Founder, and my classmates, I found an apprenticeship that went above and beyond my expectations with civilla. Had I made this decision on my own, I would have settled on any company that would have accepted me without considering my needs and wants.

This past 7 months, I gained the confidence to bring my full self to the table in considering opportunities. Now, when potential work comes my way, I am beginning to question it. Is it the right fit for me? What do I need in order for this opportunity to work? etc.

When Willow Creek asked if I would come out to spend time with them, the James of three years ago would have done anything and everything to please them. Willow Creek is a leading faith community within the American Church. I had previously studied this community and admired their work from afar for years. As such, I would have bent over backwards for their approval. But this term, I went to Willow Creek with the confidence to ask questions and to observe diligently in order to see if Willow Creek might be a good space for future collaboration.

Kicking the tires is not about being overly confident or pompous. In this instance, not only did I give Willow the opportunity to see me for who I really am, but I also gave myself the chance to see if Willow was the right fit for me. The courage to do so has opened up thought-provoking conversations and new possibilities with Willow Creek that I’m excited about.

Mike was right. It is important to “kick the tires.”
